Sheet count only. Rooms add up before rounding; your layout and cuts can change the real count.

How it works

Area = length × width for each floor, or length × height for each wall. Areas from every room are added first. In wall mode, the total area of doors and windows is then subtracted.

Sheets = ceil(area ÷ sheet area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) − 1e-9). A 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft and a 4 × 10 ft sheet covers 40 sq ft. The 10% waste default is an editable planning choice.

Worked example

A 12 × 12 ft floor is 144 sq ft. 144 ÷ 32 = 4.5 sheets. With 10% waste: 4.5 × 1.10 = 4.95 → 5 sheets.

Five 4 × 8 sheets cover 160 sq ft.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Use “Add another room” for several areas. Areas are added before rounding, so two half-sheet rooms need one sheet, not two.
  • The count is by area. Odd shapes, sheet direction and cut patterns can use more sheets; raise the waste allowance if your layout has many cuts.
  • In wall mode, enter the combined area of every door and window opening.
  • Need trim for the same room? Use the Baseboard Calculator.

Questions about this calculator

How many sheets of plywood do I need?

Divide the total area in square feet by the sheet's area, add waste, and round up. A 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft and a 4 × 10 ft sheet covers 40 sq ft.

How many 4x8 sheets of plywood do I need for a 10x10 room?

For the floor, 100 sq ft ÷ 32 = 3.1 sheets, or 4 sheets with 10% waste (3.44 rounded up). Walls are a separate area, and doors and windows come off it.

How many sheets of plywood for a 12x12 floor?

144 sq ft ÷ 32 = 4.5; with 10% waste that is 4.95, so 5 sheets.
